Day 1 – Monday | Arrival in Addis Ababa & City Sightseeing

Upon arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our airport representative in the arrivals hall. You will then meet your private English-speaking guide, who will accompany you throughout your journey, before transferring to your hotel. Located in the Ethiopian highlands at an altitude of approximately 2,100–2,300 meters, Addis Ababa is one of the highest capital cities in the world. Often referred to as the political capital of Africa, the city is home to both the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Its name, meaning "New Flower" in Amharic, reflects the city's history and vibrant character. After check-in, begin a full-day guided exploration of Addis Ababa, discovering the city's history, culture, and importance as a diplomatic center. Your first visit is to the scenic Entoto Hills, the historic birthplace of modern Addis Ababa. Rising to approximately 3,200 meters above sea level, Mt. Entoto offers sweeping panoramic views over the city and surrounding highlands. The area is also historically significant as the first settlement of Addis Ababa, where Emperor Menelik II established his residence and palace in 1887. Within the compound, visit Entoto Maryam Church, a small museum of Ethiopian religious artifacts, and the preserved Menelik II Palace, offering an insight into the origins of Ethiopia's imperial era. Continue to the National Museum of Ethiopia, one of the country's most important archaeological institutions. Here, you will encounter the world-famous fossil remains of "Lucy," estimated to be approximately 3.2 million years old. The museum also displays royal crowns, ancient artifacts, weapons, and historic collections reflecting Ethiopia's remarkable heritage. In the afternoon, visit Holy Trinity Cathedral, built in 1945 and one of Ethiopia's most important religious landmarks. The cathedral is renowned for its beautiful stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes and serves as the final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie and Empress Menen, along with other notable historical figures. Day 2 – Tuesday | Fly Addis Ababa – Bahir Dar & Lake Tana Excursion

After an early breakfast, take a domestic flight to Bahir Dar, the capital of the Amhara Region, situated on the shores of Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel for check-in. Later, take a boat cruise on Lake Tana to discover the ancient monasteries and churches located on its islands and shores. Visit Ura Kidane Mihret, one of the most important island monasteries, famous for its vivid biblical wall paintings and Orthodox Christian heritage. Continue to Azwa Maryam, a quieter island monastery known for its peaceful setting, traditional architecture, and ancient manuscripts. Together, these sites provide a fascinating insight into the spiritual and cultural heritage of Lake Tana, where centuries-old monastic traditions continue in harmony with nature. In the afternoon, visit Tississat Falls, meaning "water that smokes" in Amharic. Located approximately 32 kilometers south of Bahir Dar, the falls are one of Ethiopia's most famous natural attractions. Note: Due to a nearby hydroelectric power scheme, the waterfalls cannot always be guaranteed to be flowing at full force. Day 3 – Wednesday | Bahir Dar – Gondar & Royal City Exploration

After breakfast, depart Bahir Dar and drive through the scenic Ethiopian highlands toward Gondar. Along the way, enjoy views of rural villages, farmlands, rolling hills, and the beautiful Ethiopian countryside. Upon arrival in Gondar, check in to your hotel before beginning your exploration of this historic UNESCO World Heritage city. Founded in 1636 by Emperor Fasilides, Gondar served as the capital of the Ethiopian Empire and became a center of royal power and architectural innovation. Today, the city is renowned for its castles, churches, palaces, and ceremonial sites. Your first visit is to the Royal Enclosure, or Fasil Ghebbi, a UNESCO-listed complex that served as the residence of Ethiopian emperors. Within its stone walls, explore a collection of castles and palaces built by successive rulers during the 17th century, including the impressive Fasilides Castle, which reflects a fascinating blend of Ethiopian, Arabian, and European architectural influences. Continue to the historic Fasilides Bath, a large rectangular pool surrounded by trees and stone structures. Originally believed to have served as a royal swimming pool, it now plays an important spiritual role during the annual Timkat celebrations, when thousands gather to commemorate the baptism of Christ. Later, visit Debre Berhan Selassie Church, built in the late 17th century by Emperor Iyasu I. The church is famous for its extraordinary interior, with walls and ceilings covered in vividly painted religious imagery. Day 4 – Thursday | Simien Mountains National Park

After an early breakfast, depart for Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its spectacular volcanic landscapes, dramatic escarpments, deep valleys, unique flora, and endemic wildlife. The park is home to several remarkable species, including the rare Walia ibex, Ethiopian wolf, and the distinctive Gelada baboon, recognized by its characteristic red chest patch. Begin your excursion with a stop at the scenic Kosoye Viewpoint, offering panoramic views over the rugged highlands and deep valleys of the Simien Mountains. Continue to Debark, the main entrance and administrative center of the national park, where a local scout will join you as required by park regulations. Proceed to the spectacular Buyit Ras Viewpoint, one of the park's most impressive vantage points. The area provides excellent opportunities to admire the dramatic mountain scenery and potentially spot wildlife along the route. A picnic lunch is usually arranged near Jimbar Falls, surrounded by the magnificent mountain landscape. After your exploration, return to Gondar. Overnight: Gondar Hills Resort or similar

Day 5 – Friday | Fly Gondar – Lalibela & Rock-Hewn Churches

After breakfast, transfer to Gondar Airport for your domestic flight to Lalibela, one of Africa's most extraordinary historical and spiritual destinations. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your lodge for check-in. Nestled in the rugged Ethiopian highlands, Lalibela is often described as a "living biblical wonder." Its UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a remarkable collection of churches carved directly into volcanic rock during the 12th century under the reign of King Lalibela. In the afternoon, begin your exploration of the legendary rock-hewn churches. Your visit focuses on part of the northern cluster, including the monumental Bete Medhane Alem, widely regarded as the largest monolithic church in the world. Connected by a network of trenches, tunnels, and narrow passageways, these sacred structures form a remarkable underground spiritual complex that remains an active place of worship. Continue exploring selected churches within this cluster, experiencing Lalibela's unique sacred landscape and its living religious traditions. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight. Day 6 – Saturday | Asheton Mariam Monastery & Lalibela's Remaining Churches

After breakfast, depart for an unforgettable excursion to Asheton Mariam Monastery, dramatically perched high in the mountains overlooking Lalibela. The drive, followed by an ascent, offers increasingly spectacular views of the surrounding highlands, central Lalibela, and its world-famous rock-hewn churches. The final approach is on foot along a scenic but challenging trail that winds through rural landscapes and small villages, where traditional ways of life continue much as they have for generations. The trail gradually ascends along narrow mountain paths until reaching the monastery. Asheton Mariam remains an active place of worship and is cared for by a resident priest who welcomes pilgrims and visitors. Inside, discover sacred religious treasures, including ancient processional crosses and a beautifully illustrated Bible featuring traditional artwork. In the afternoon, return to Lalibela and continue exploring the remaining rock-hewn churches that complete this extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among them is the iconic Bete Giyorgis, or Church of St. George, renowned for its perfectly carved cross-shaped design and considered the most emblematic structure in Lalibela. Explore additional tunnels, interconnected passageways, and subterranean corridors linking the churches together, revealing the extraordinary engineering and spiritual vision behind what is often described as the "New Jerusalem." Later, enjoy an optional cultural interaction with the local community, including participation in a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony—a wonderful opportunity to experience local hospitality and daily life. Day 7 – Sunday | Fly Lalibela – Addis Ababa & Merkato

After breakfast, transfer to Lalibela Airport for your domestic flight back to Addis Ababa. Upon arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. After lunch and some time to relax, set out with your guide to explore Merkato, one of the largest open-air markets in Africa. A vibrant and bustling center of daily life, Merkato offers an immersive experience into Addis Ababa's commercial and cultural rhythm. As you explore its lively streets and alleys, you will encounter spices, traditional crafts, household goods, local produce, and much more. This is also an ideal opportunity to shop for souvenirs and experience authentic interactions with local communities. In the evening, enjoy a memorable traditional Ethiopian cultural dinner at a local restaurant. Ethiopia is home to more than 80 ethnic groups, each with its own languages, customs, music, and traditions. During the evening, enjoy traditional music and dance performances representing different regions of the country, accompanied by a selection of Ethiopian cuisine. You may also have the opportunity to taste Tej, Ethiopia's traditional honey wine. After the cultural dinner, return to your hotel for overnight accommodation. Day 8 – Monday | Departure from Addis Ababa

After breakfast, enjoy your final morning in Addis Ababa before checking out. At the appropriate time, you will be transferred by private vehicle and driver to Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for your onward international departure flight. Your memorable journey through Ethiopia's historic cities, spectacular landscapes, and extraordinary spiritual heritage comes to an end.
