The Best Time to Visit Italy (Month-by-Month Guide)

Quick Answer: The Best Months to Visit Italy

If you want the short version: April, May, September, and October are the sweet spot. The weather is warm but not sweltering, the crowds are manageable, and most of our escorted Italy tours are running at full schedule.

Italy is one of the world's most visited destinations — which means timing your trip matters more than almost anywhere else. Go at the wrong time and you're fighting crowds at the Colosseum in 95-degree heat. Go at the right time and you have Positano almost to yourself. Here's a complete month-by-month breakdown to help you decide when to go.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

January & February — Off-Season

Italy in winter is quiet, cheap, and surprisingly charming. Rome and Florence are far less crowded, and you'll find lower prices on flights and hotels. The downside: some coastal areas like the Amalfi Coast are largely shut down, and the weather in the north (Venice, Milan) can be cold and grey.

Best for: Budget travelers, city-focused trips to Rome and Florence.
Not ideal for: Amalfi Coast, Capri, Sicily beach trips.

March — Early Spring

March is a transitional month. The crowds haven't arrived yet, prices are still reasonable, and the countryside starts to bloom. Weather is unpredictable — pack layers. Some tours begin departing in late March.

Best for: Travelers who want value and don't mind variable weather.
Watch out for: Easter week, which falls in March some years and brings significant crowds to Rome.

April & May — Peak Spring ⭐ Highly Recommended

This is prime Italy. Temperatures are comfortable (65–75°F), the landscapes are green and flower-filled, and the tourist hordes haven't fully descended yet. The Amalfi Coast is open, Capri is beautiful, and Sicily is at its best.

Most of our escorted Italy tours launch their full departure schedules in April, including the popular Jewels of the South 7 Days and Beautiful Coast 8 Days.

Best for: First-timers, couples, anyone wanting the full Italy experience.
Book early: April and May fill up fast — departures can sell out 3–4 months in advance.

June — Early Summer

June is still excellent, particularly early in the month. School holidays haven't started yet in most countries, so crowds are manageable. By late June, temperatures start climbing (80°F+) and the summer rush begins.

Best for: Travelers with school-age children who can travel before summer break.

July & August — Peak Summer

This is Italy at its busiest and hottest. Cities like Rome and Florence can hit 95–100°F in August. The Vatican and Colosseum lines are brutal without pre-booked access. Many Italians themselves leave the cities in August for the coast.

That said, the Amalfi Coast, Capri, and Sicily are absolutely stunning in summer. Our semi-escorted tours like Napoli Express & Sorrento run every Saturday through the summer.

Best for: Beach lovers, travelers with fixed summer vacation windows.
Not ideal for: Those sensitive to heat or crowds.

September & October — Peak Autumn ⭐ Highly Recommended

September and October rival April and May as the best months to visit. The summer crowds have thinned, temperatures have dropped to a comfortable 70–80°F, and the light is golden and beautiful. Harvest season means the food and wine are at their peak — especially in Tuscany.

This is the best time for our Classical Italy: Rome, Florence & Venice and Fantasia Mediterranea 11 Days tours. Both run through October with guaranteed departures.

Best for: Everyone — this is the most universally recommended time to visit.
Book early: October especially fills up fast.

November & December — Late Season

November brings rain and cooler temperatures, but also dramatically fewer tourists and lower prices. December is magical in the cities — Christmas markets in Rome, Florence, and Bologna are worth the trip. The Amalfi Coast and coastal tours are largely done for the season.

Best for: Travelers who love atmosphere over weather, and want to avoid crowds entirely.

What About Crowds?

Colosseum, Rome: Crowded year-round. Skip-the-line access (included in our escorted tours) is essential regardless of when you go.

Vatican Museums: Same — book in advance or join an escorted tour with pre-booked entry.

Amalfi Coast: Shoulder season (May, September) is significantly less crowded than July–August. The coastal road gets extremely congested in peak summer.

Capri: Early morning ferry crossings in May and September offer the island at its most peaceful.

Venice: Surprisingly manageable in March and November. Brutally crowded in summer.

Our Recommendation

If you're a first-timer and have flexibility: go in May or September. You'll get the best of everything — great weather, manageable crowds, full tour availability, and Italy at its most beautiful.
