Packing for a South Africa safari is not like packing for a beach holiday. The wrong colour shirt can scare wildlife, the wrong bag can get rejected on a bush flight, and forgetting one small item can ruin a dawn game drive. Here is the exact checklist we give our travellers — and what you should leave at home.
Why Packing for a Safari Is Different
South Africa safaris involve early mornings, dusty roads, strict luggage limits on small planes, and temperature swings of 20 degrees in a single day. You do not need to overpack, but you do need to pack right.
After fifteen years of guiding travellers through Cape Town, Kruger, and Victoria Falls, we have refined this list to the essentials. Print it, check it off, and travel lighter.
The Safari Clothing Checklist
Rule one: neutral colours only. Khaki, olive, brown, and beige blend into the bush. White and black stand out — white scares birds, and black attracts tsetse flies. Bright colours and busy patterns are distracting in photos and in the wild.
Tops
- 2–3 lightweight long-sleeve shirts (linen or moisture-wicking synthetic)
- 2 short-sleeve t-shirts or polo shirts in neutral tones
- 1 fleece or light down jacket for dawn game drives
- 1 lightweight rain shell (summer only, or year-round for Victoria Falls mist)
Bottoms
- 2 pairs of safari trousers or zip-off hiking pants
- 1 pair of comfortable jeans or chinos for Cape Town evenings
- 1 pair of shorts (optional — most travellers prefer long trousers for sun and insect protection)
Footwear
- 1 pair of closed-toe walking shoes or light hiking boots (essential for bush walks)
- 1 pair of sandals or loafers for lodge downtime and Cape Town dinners
- 4–5 pairs of moisture-wicking socks
Accessories
- Wide-brimmed hat or cap with neck flap
- Buff or lightweight scarf (dust protection on open vehicles)
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- Swimsuit (most lodges have pools)
The Safari Gear Checklist
You do not need professional camera equipment to enjoy Kruger, but a few items make a dramatic difference.
- Binoculars: 8x42 or 10x42. Do not rely on your phone zoom.
- Camera or smartphone with zoom lens: If using a phone, bring a clip-on telephoto lens.
- Headlamp or small torch: Lodges often have limited lighting at 5:00 AM.
- Daypack or sling bag: For carrying water, sunscreen, and layers during game drives.
- Water bottle: Reusable. Lodges provide filtered water.
- Power bank: USB-chargeable. Electricity in bush lodges can be generator-dependent.
- Universal travel adapter: South Africa uses Type M plugs (three round pins).
The Health & Toiletries Checklist
- Sunscreen SPF 50+: The African sun is intense even in winter.
- Insect repellent: DEET-based for Kruger; essential in summer.
- Anti-malarial medication: Required for Kruger and Victoria Falls in summer. Consult your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel.
- Prescription medications: Pack in carry-on with original labels.
- Basic first-aid kit: Plasters, antiseptic cream, anti-diarrhoea tablets, painkillers.
- Personal toiletries: Most lodges provide shampoo and soap, but bring your preferred brands.
- Hand sanitiser and wet wipes: Game drives can be dusty.
The Documents Checklist
Keep physical copies and digital backups on your phone.
- Passport (valid for at least 30 days beyond departure, with 2 blank pages)
- Printed travel insurance documents
- Flight confirmations and e-tickets
- Lodge and tour vouchers
- International driving permit (only if self-driving)
- Yellow fever certificate (required if arriving from a yellow fever country)
What NOT to Pack for a Safari
Overpacking is the most common mistake we see. Leave these items at home:
- Hard-shell suitcases: Many lodges and bush flights require soft duffel bags. See below.
- Dark navy or black clothing: Attracts flies and absorbs heat.
- High heels or formal shoes: Even upscale lodges are relaxed. Smart casual is the dress code.
- Drone: Illegal to fly in all South African national parks without special permits.
- Strong perfumes or colognes: Animals have sensitive noses, and strong scents attract insects.
- Excessive jewellery: Unnecessary and risky on safari.
Luggage Rules for Bush Flights
Our 7-day Cape Town, Kruger & Victoria Falls safari includes light aircraft or charter flights between destinations. These planes have strict weight limits.
| Flight Route | Typical Luggage Limit | Bag Type |
|---|---|---|
| Cape Town to Hoedspruit (Kruger) | 20 kg (44 lbs) total | Soft duffel bag strongly preferred |
| Hoedspruit to Johannesburg | 20 kg (44 lbs) total | Soft duffel bag strongly preferred |
| Johannesburg to Victoria Falls | 23 kg (50 lbs) checked | Standard luggage acceptable |
Pro tip: Pack a small soft duffel for the Kruger portion of your trip and leave your hard suitcase in Cape Town or Johannesburg storage if possible. Your lodge can arrange this.
Packing by Season
If you are travelling in winter (May–September), add a warm beanie, gloves, and an extra fleece. Morning game drives start at 6:00 AM when temperatures can be near freezing. If you are travelling in summer (October–April), prioritise breathable fabrics, a waterproof shell, and extra insect repellent. Read our full month-by-month Kruger weather guide for more detail.
