Chimpanzee Tracking in Kibale Forest: A First-Timer's Guide

Chimpanzee resting on a branch in the forest canopy

If gorillas are the gentle giants of Uganda's forests, chimpanzees are the life of the party. You often hear them before you see them: a rising chorus of hoots and screams echoing through the trees, followed by the thump of hands drumming on buttress roots. Kibale Forest National Park is one of the best places in Africa to experience it.

Why Kibale?

Kibale is often called the primate capital of the world. Its tropical forest is home to around 13 primate species, including a large population of chimpanzees, red colobus and black-and-white colobus monkeys, and the striking L'Hoest's monkey. Several chimpanzee communities are habituated to people, which is why sightings here are so reliable.

How the day works

Your morning begins with a briefing at the Kanyanchu visitor center. Rangers split visitors into small groups and lead you into the forest along trails and animal paths. Walks are usually easier than gorilla treks, on flatter ground, though the forest can be muddy after rain.

Chimps move fast, often high in the canopy. When your group catches up with them, you spend up to an hour watching them feed, groom, squabble and play. Moments on the ground are thrilling, as a big male strides past just meters away.

Tips for a great encounter

  • Look up and listen. Your ears will often find the chimps first.

  • Bring binoculars. They help with chimps high in fig trees and with Kibale's birdlife.

  • Wear long sleeves and trousers. Tuck them into your socks to keep ants out.

  • Keep your camera ready but flash off. Light is low under the canopy, so a fast lens helps.

There is a minimum age for chimp tracking, typically 12, which we confirm when you book.

Want more time with the chimps?

The Chimpanzee Habituation Experience lets you spend most of a day with a community being accustomed to humans, from the moment they leave their nests. Ask us about adding it to your safari.

Don't miss Bigodi Wetland

Just outside the park, a guided community walk through Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary is a relaxed afternoon highlight, with great birding and a chance to support local projects.
