Only three countries in the world let you trek to see mountain gorillas: Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. For most travelers, the choice comes down to Uganda or Rwanda. Both offer the same extraordinary hour with a gorilla family. The differences are in cost, access and everything that surrounds the trek.
Permit cost
This is the biggest difference. Rwanda positions gorilla trekking as a premium, low-volume experience, and its permits cost considerably more than Uganda's. For couples and families, choosing Uganda can save a significant amount, which many travelers put toward extra nights on safari. Permit prices change, so we always confirm the current rate when you book.
Getting there
Rwanda wins on convenience. Volcanoes National Park is roughly a two to three hour drive from Kigali, so a short gorilla trip is easy to add to another itinerary.
Bwindi, in southwestern Uganda, is more remote. It is a long scenic drive from Entebbe, or a short domestic flight to a nearby airstrip. On our 7-Day Uganda Safari, the journey is part of the adventure, with stops in Kibale and Queen Elizabeth National Park along the way.
The trek itself
Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park sits on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes, with bamboo forest and open mountain views. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest lives up to its name: dense, steep and lush, with a true jungle feel. Both can be challenging, and both are manageable with moderate fitness and a porter.
Uganda also offers the Gorilla Habituation Experience in parts of Bwindi, a longer visit of up to four hours with a gorilla family still being accustomed to people. It is a rare option for serious wildlife lovers.
Beyond the gorillas
This is where Uganda shines. In one trip you can track chimpanzees in Kibale Forest, cruise the hippo-filled Kazinga Channel, and look for tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Rwanda has wonderful experiences too, including golden monkeys and Nyungwe Forest, but Uganda's classic savannah safari is hard to match.
Which should you choose?
Choose Rwanda if you have limited time, want the shortest travel, and budget is less of a concern.
Choose Uganda if you want better value, a true jungle trek, and gorillas, chimps and big game in a single trip.
Many travelers combine both. We are happy to design a private Uganda and Rwanda itinerary around your dates.
